Counseling Stories: New Eyes

One of Rio Salado’s talented counselors, Amberly Lebeck-Brown, experienced a recent victory for one of her students at Rio Salado’s Northern location. She noticed the student using two pairs of glasses and this provoked concern. Subsequently, the student disclosed her vision impairment and Lebeck-Brown intervened.

This is Ancita! She has been enrolled in the Community Bridge Pathways high school equivalency classes since August 2014, despite personal challenges. Her income is limited, she has health issues, but she has been diligent about her studies. In order to read her textbooks, Ancita was using two pairs of glasses she purchased from a dollar store. Thanks to a Rio Salado Counselor and the New Eyes organization, Ancita no longer needs two inefficient pairs of glasses!

Lebeck-Brown's inspiring story exemplifies how critical it is to remove barriers to a student’s educational journey through networking with community agencies and organizations.

This is one example of how Rio Salado’s counselors seek to make the lives of their students better. In addition, it demonstrates the significant role counselors play within student success. Counseling and Career Services connect students with a variety of vital resources, not only career and academic related, that can make a profound impact on their overall well-being.
